We’re here to answer your questions, but we’ve found a lot of people prefer to have an idea about how to commission a mural, and an understanding of the overall process, before they call to ask specific questions.

So here’s a How to Commission A Mural FAQ. We’re planning on re-formatting this page soon to a more conventional FAQ format for your convenience, but all the info is here.

How To Commission A Mural

The 2 biggest questions usually are: What does a mural cost and how long does it take?

The Big Answer: It Depends…

We wish there was a simple answer, but every mural and mural site is different. Ultimately, the subject matter, detail level, and size of the mural are going to be the dominating factors in price and time, then we calculate a sq. ft. price. But there are many other factors to be considered that can affect price. Below is an overview of our mural process, including how we determine the total price.

Commission a Larger Than Life Mural- An Overview of The Process

This process overview applies to most private and business commissions of Larger Than Life Murals. The public art process is a little more complicated, but mostly to meet public agency requirements, not ours.

  1. It starts with a  conversation about what you want designed and/or painted. Yes, we can paint an existing logo or artwork as long as there are no copyright infringements, or we can design it for you. If you have existing artwork, you can email us a jpeg if you’d like, along with a name and phone number so we can contact you to discuss it. Call us and we’ll give you our direct email. We use a contact form on our website to help prevent spam.
  2. We’ll also discuss whether or not you have a set budget. Knowing your budget before the design is created, allows Larger Than Life Murals to stretch your mural project dollars as far as possible, yielding you, the highest quality artwork and value possible. We always give 110% effort, go the extra mile, burn the midnight oil… it’s just who we are. If the mural you want will cost way more than your budget, then we need to rethink things right here. But that’s really rare, we can usually find a way to make it work, by discussing options like simplifying the design concept, or raising  funds.
  3. Next, we’ll make an appt. for a site inspection and to take photos. We need to see where your mural will live, how it will be viewed, lighting conditions, and it’s surrounding environment to ensure that your mural will look at home in the space. You want it to stand out, not stick out. We also take wall measurements, inspect for soundness or cracks, peeling paint, etc. We make notes of site amenities and liabilities such as level or uneven ground, shrubs or other landscaping we have to work around, height/equipment requirements (ladders, scaffold, etc.), physical  accessibility and hours of accessibility, site security, availability of power/water, etc.
  4. If we’re designing the mural for you, that will take a little time at this point, again depending on the subject matter and complexity, it could be a few days or a few weeks to get a finished design. If you already have the design artwork, then we skip to 5.
  5. Using Photoshop or other design programs, we create images of your mural artwork/design on your wall images, so you really get an accurate idea of what the proposed finished mural will look like.  I’ll elaborate here, because we’ve heard stories of clients being shown a rough sketch or even an illustration, and giving their approval, only to find that the finished mural looks quite different than what they expected, and were sometimes disappointed. Larger Than Life Murals artists have the ability to paint what we see pretty accurately, resulting in the design illustration and the finished photos looking very close. We’ve had clients tell us they were really surprised how much the real mural looked like the design illustration.
  6. Usually, it’s best to meet again at this point, for design approval or to discuss any desired changes. We can also email images if meeting at this time is not practical due to distance or other factors.
  7. Once you approve the final design, you will receive a written proposal with all the details including the final design, a proposed work schedule with start and end dates, total price, warrantees, and a required deposit amount to lock-in dates. Deposits can vary, but it’s usually 50%, with the balance due upon completion and acceptance. Larger jobs over $10,000 are usually billed  30/30/40. (30% down, 30% at the half-way point, and 40% after completion.)
  8. When the written proposal has been approved, and deposit received, we submit a schedule for painting for final approval, and then we get started painting!

Before you know it, you’ll have a beautiful Larger Than Life Mural to enjoy for years to come.

Note: Larger Than Life Murals uses Nova Color 100% Acrylic Artist paint with the highest UV rating. Each mural is sealed with a sealer best suited for the particular mural, based on several factors including location, exposure, etc.

We hope this has been helpful. Every muralist may have their own unique process, but this is a basic overview of our process here at Larger Than Life Murals. Please contact us with any questions, and thank you for your interest.
